Mother Dear,
Thanks you for all you have given up for your family…Time, sleep, money, your own desires, your dreams…Much of yourself was left on the shelf for years—the only thing dusty in your home, waiting for the freedom to be heard and experienced. Some of it never did come into being because of your self-sacrifice; it will all be waiting for you in Heaven. So, I rise from my chair to show my respect, and I say what others haven't said enough: You are an intelligent, beautiful and wonderfully strong women, Mom. You have weathered your storms well and have come out better because of them. Many have benefited from the gift of who you are. And you will follow Gods mandate when you leave this world. You will leave it better than you found it so many years ago through us. May every seed of love that you planted in our lives be returned to you in multiplied ways in heaven.

She was the first black secretary to be hired at Robertson Department Store, Bendix Corporation, Kaley/J.F.Kennedy Elementary School and Executive Secretary of the St. Joe County Engineer Dept. where she retired. This mother, grandmother and great grandmother is known as "The Little Girl In The Red Bathing Suit," the civil rights icon of the Indiana University Civil Right Heritage Center of South Bend, Indiana. Mrs. Brandy's mindset as a woman/mother was knowledge is key and she prided herself in continued self education outside of the class room. Literature, history, the arts, business, current policies and local government could be the topic of the day when conversing with her. When her children posed a question to her, the response would be "It's in one of those books in there", to encourage the process of research, independent thinking or it was teaching time as she loved to do by bi-weekly taking trips to the library. She passed these practices to her children, grand, great grand and neighborhood children. They were taught that the only thing that can stop you is you. God has placed you here to show the world there is a light inside of you. Let it shine, work hard, perfect your craft and leave things better than you found it.
